Through the legislative session, Republican lawmakers made Voter ID legislation their singular priority. In an effort to suppress the Democratic vote, they promoted a bill that addressed only one type of voter fraud - voter impersonation - which is virtually non-existent. Their obsession with this partisan solution in search of a problem stood in the way of Democratic efforts to truly make voting more secure.
While we knew the Republican leadership was disingenuous in its "voter fraud" crusade, recent news proves their hypocrisy also extends into corrupt dealings for personal gain. As reported in the Houston Chronicle, the Harris County assistant voter registrar - an official who decides who gets to vote and who doesn't - moonlights as a paid Republican political consultant, with Harris County Republican candidate clients whose names appear on the very ballots he handles. Worse yet, State Rep. Dwayne Bohac actually owns Campaign Data Systems, the Republican consulting firm that employs the voter registrar, Ed Johnson.
Yes, you read that correctly - the voter registrar, Ed Johnson, is being paid by candidates whose names are on the ballots he has a role in counting, including Rep. Dwayne Bohac.
As reported by the Houston Chronicle, Johnson oversaw the rejection of 70,000 voter registration applications during the 2008 election cycle, prompting the Texas Democratic Party to take legal action (in comparison, Dallas County rejected only 1,800 applications during the same period).
