AIDS

It saeems that 25+ years later AIDS is forgotten by more in the US as a threat. Don't look for this info in MSM... you won't find it.
In a report on Daily Kos they state:

Every day, 1,500 babies around the world are born with HIV.

The United States averages less than one HIV-positive baby per day.

Europe the same.

Africa averages 1,400 daily.

Every year, fewer than 7,000 HIV-positive women in the United States give birth.

Every year, 9,000 HIV-positive women in the Soweto township in South Africa give birth.

The US population: roughly 310 million

Soweto’s: 10 million.

Pretty sad numbers after a quarter of a century of fighting it.

This site seems to have a pretty good set of articles on the subject. http://sciencespeaks.wordpress.com/2009/06/11/newsmaker-kevin-decock/

  1. it's very strange, but it almost seemed like AIDS disappeared off the American radar once it moved primary vectors form the gay community to the poor black (female) community. Probably because so much of the focus that was on it came from Hollywood celebriteis- who knew tons of gay designers, musicians, artists, etc., but once the gay community embraced safer sex and m2m transmission kind of stabilized the focus kind of shifted. It's wierd for the public to have more sympathy for gay d00ds than poor blacks.
